It is found from Florida to Nova Scotia west to eastern Oklahoma, Minnesota and Ontario. It is an ever green terrestrial herb with variegated leaves. It is a creeping plant that divides on the ground surface growing on rock shelves. It prefers mild to moderately acidic soils. Rattlesnake Orchids flower in mid July-early September. Excellent for reclaiming wooded areas and rock gardens. Hardy in zones 4-8
